Lotus Rising Project
Lotus Rising Project (LRP) is a youth led social justice
organization in Southern Oregon. Not Straight Not Sure (NSNS), the
local youth group for those with diverse sexualities and gender
identities, dreamed of this project since 2005 and developed it in
2008. LRP gained its 501 (c) 3 status December 2008.
Purpose:
Is to expand NSNS services by creating an umbrella non-profit organization that would encompass other projects, such as the Southern Oregon Gay-Straight Alliance Support Network that was funded in 2008. Another project that has been a part of NSNS since its inception is a food bank. This project is slated to grow into a sustainable, organic food bank for all people in need. This bank also includes a free box of donated clothing, computers, and computer accessories. The diagram to the left displays LRP's model with LRP occupying the center spoke from which other programs branch off.
Philosophy:
LRP's leadership model is different than most. It is based on an empowerment model that includes spiritual activism theory. Activism in any form can be tiring and wearing on those involved, due to fighting injustice. However, if the precepts of spiritual activism, such as: compassion and letting go of outcome is followed, burn-out happens less often. The group works together as a community by reminding one another of these precepts and working on their own internalized oppression. This model was practiced by Martin Luther King Jr. and Gandhi.
